Kick start your New Year Resolutions in Portugal with One Off Places...

Suffering from excessive Christmas consumption? New Year resolutions struggling to bed themselves in? Why not start 2009 as you mean to go on and enjoy a break at one of these beautiful places in Portugal. Each can provide therapies or treatments to cure your Christmas excess and set you up for a sparkling year ahead. And although Portugal may not occur as a winter or spring destination it has so much to recommend it. The climate is clear and cool, the countryside is stunning and best of all you won’t be drowning in hordes of fellow tourists!

Total Luxury with Onsite Spa Room and Treatments
Ideal for a group of family or friends looking to unwind together, the villa de Herdade has 7 luxurious ensuite bedrooms and is set in beautiful rolling grounds in Portugal’s Alentejo region. The weather is usually cool and clear during the early months of the year which makes this perfect for meandering walks and relaxing by the open fires. Most importantly there is also a spa room onsite – liaise with the owners to book facials, massages and body scrubs – or if you wanted to continue the Christmas excess you could even have a chocolate wrap! Other facilities onsite include a beautiful pool area plus there is babysitting, maid service and even chefs available to guarantee all your time there is spent on R&R rather than chores.

As a special offer, the owners are running a weekend only deal from January until March. They invite you to stay on Friday and Saturday night with late check out on Sunday. They will organize a traditional Portuguese dinner at the property for either the Saturday or Sunday night, a breakfast hamper and even (pausing the detox for a minute) a wine tasting at a local vineyard (the closest vineyards have both won gold medals in Brussels for the wines in their class this year). This deal is available based on full occupancy (5 couples) and costs only €200 per person. Nearest airport – Lisbon (flights available from £125 per adult return)*. For further info, see: http://www.oneoffplaces.co.uk/Europe/Portugal/Central-Portugal/Herdade-dos-Alfanges.aspx

Clear nights, calm days and views to die for
For more intimate trip why not take yourself over to Luminoso. Named after the evocative light and low pollution levels found in the area that allow wonderful star-spotting at night, this 2 bedroom cottage is nestled within the Alentejo countryside and has been built in a traditional Alentejo style. It has 2 bathrooms (one ensuite) and 2 terraces – both of which offer wonderful views across the Portuguese countryside. Life here is rustic and slow-paced – enjoy exploring it on foot, by car or even on horseback before coming back to relax with local food by the open fire. The nearby (but not too close!) owners are delighted to arrange photography courses, or more pertinently you can also sign up for a course in kinesiology – the alternative therapy of using 'Muscle Testing' to detect and correct imbalances in the body before addressing the underlying causes of disease or malfunction. Perfect for letting you know where you may be going wrong, and what to look for in the future! Nearest airport – Lisbon (flights available from £125 per adult return)*. Visit: http://www.oneoffplaces.co.uk/Europe/Portugal/Alentejo/Luminoso.aspx

Privacy, seclusion and never-ending walking trails
Finally, enjoy fantastic views and total privacy in 4 acres of grounds in this beautiful restored cottage near to Monchique. The cottage itself has 3 bedrooms, and a wonderful garden with wildflowers and a variety of trees. The surrounding area is crisscrossed with paths for walking, while the mountains nearby offer more views and even perhaps eagles soaring overhead to accompany you on your explorations. The owners will happily arrange for a masseuse to visit the house as a part of your detox regime – while the famous spa at Caldas de Monchique is only 20 minutes away and offers a full range of treatments and entertainments. There is horse-riding and mountain biking also available for more active visitors – and being only 40 minutes from the coast guarantees you many surf-tossed beaches and cliff top paths; ideal for blowing away the cobwebs and clearing your way for the push into 2009! Nearest airport – Faro (flights available from £75 per adult return)*. Visit: http://www.oneoffplaces.co.uk/Europe/Portugal/Algarve/Quinta-da-Relva.aspx

Hold Your Wedding In A Spanish Paradise With One Off Places

Stunning Spanish Venue
Palacete de Cázulas is a country mansion in Andalucia, Spain. Dating back to 1492, it is a stunning venue for your special day with accommodation onsite, spacious and secluded grounds and even its own licensed chapel - everything is, quite literally, on your doorstep.

This is an outstanding country venue that can accommodate up to 24 guests onsite (20 in the main house in 11 bedrooms, and 4 in a cottage in the gardens), while there is a wide selection of hotels in nearby Almuñecar as well. It has been painstakingly restored throughout to reflect its Moorish heritage and its atmosphere and outstanding historical features, including some of the original furniture, Sevillian wall tiles etc. The ornamental Moorish gardens are stunningly maintained and offer guests the opportunity to wander or relax in total peace and tranquillity. Surrounded by centuries old palm trees, shady borders and colourful exotic plants, plus ancient cypress hedges border an attractive swimming pool that is fed by a natural spring. There are several terraces and a sizeable outside eating and bar area – all of which is surrounded by unspoilt views of the hillside and valley. It is a truly memorable place to hold your special day.

The gardens and terraces can accommodate up to 110 guests comfortably for the reception. The Chapel will seat up to 45 and a maximum attendance of 70 persons (the remainder standing). It is also possible to arrange as much or as little of the event through wedding co-ordinators who will be pleased to help with all aspects of the day. Costs for weddings depend on the couples requirement and will be quoted for on request.

Palacete de Cazulas is situated 20km from the seaside town of Almuñecar in Andalucia, Spain. It is only 55km from Granada airport, and 100km from Malaga airport. As well being only half an hour from the nearest beach, visitors to this region should also visit Granada with its dramatic Alhambra Palace (1 hour’s drive), and the ski resort of Sol y Nieve in the Sierra Nevada is only 1.5 hours away. There is also a huge choice of local sports, from deep sea diving on the coast to hangliding in the mountains which should be more than enough to occupy your guests in the run up to, or a few days after, your celebration. For further details, please see http://www.oneoffplaces.co.uk/Europe/Spain/Andalucia/Palacete-de-Cazulas.aspx

Honeymoon to match...
Having made the trip over for your wedding why not take advantage and enjoy your honeymoon in one of the properties below – near enough for an easy transfer but far enough to really enjoy your time alone?

Only a few hours drive from Almuñecar , Dar Hajra is one of Andalucía’s most spectacular rental properties, sculpted around a rocky crag in a forest of the Grazalema park. The views are inspirational, the infinity pool amazing, and the house has been decorated with great style. You’ll find no more romantic a hideaway: this is a place to let your spirit soar. See http://www.oneoffplaces.co.uk/Europe/Spain/Andalucia/Dar-Hajra.aspx

Again a few hours away is the beautiful Spanish hill town of Ronda, and just
5 minutes outside is the luxury 2 bedroom villa La Cancela. Wonderfully secluded and featuring all mod cons, this villa features everything that you need for the perfect post-celebration holiday including 2 ensuite bedrooms, private pool, lawned gardens, surrounding orchards and even catering available on request for those nights when the fully appointed kitchen looks like too much hard work! Christmas by the sea and other stunning offers from One Off Places this Winter

What could be more romantic than a Christmas spent literally surrounded by sea views and salty air? Grab this incredible opportunity and stay in the stunning Plantation House with One Off Places. Walk into Yarmouth to explore wintery pubs or go further afield and take on the Tennyson Trail cliff walk for a view of the Needles. Or you could just stay home for a week, stoke up the log fire and call in a delivery of locally caught lobster, crab and line-caught bass for a Christmas meal with a real difference!

Plantation House is a unique architect-designed property on the edge of Yarmouth. Featuring 360 foot of sea frontage it provides the opportunity to stay within striking distance of the historic harbour and the attractions of the surrounding area. The house itself was originally built by Lady Caernarvon in 1930 in the grounds of her estate as “a place to enjoy sea views while surrounded by peaceful trees”. The trees have remained while the property was extended in 1988 and then entirely refurbished in natural materials in 2007, incorporating state of the art services. The result is luxury accommodation for up to six guests, with a living room with hardwood floors, an open fire and triple aspect views out to sea. See pictures attached, plus this link for more details: http://www.oneoffplaces.co.uk/Europe/England/Isle-of-Wight/Plantation-House.aspx

Owing to a recent cancellation Plantation House is available for rent over the Christmas and New Year period. Although it sleeps six people in three ensuite bedrooms, it is ideal for a smaller more intimate gathering as the owners are delighted to offer a 50% discount off their standard rate if only two people stay (making it £1450 per week), or 25% off for four people (i.e. £2175 per week). They are also willing to offer a shorter break if required, with a day rate at pro rata the weekly one (£207 for 2 people, or £310 for 4 people) for a minimum 3 night stay.

Getting to Yarmouth is simple. The nearest mainland ferry port is Lymington in the New Forest and the crossing takes only half an hour – upon arrival you either have a short drive or alternatively a bus or taxi from the harbour to the house. Or, if you get the ferry over from Portsmouth on the other side of the island (and you haven’t driven yourself) then the train station is only a mile’s bracing walk from your destination (or there’s always the bus or taxi!)

As well as Plantation House, One Off Places is delighted to offer the following winter break ideas or discounts:

Christmas skiing in the shadow of Mount Etna on Sicily?
Make it the experience of a lifetime - skiing on a volcano offers incredible contrast between black lava flow, white snow and (hopefully) blue skies above. And then you can get to the beach ad the Ionian Sea in an hour’s drive for a real contrast. House of Camellia is situated on an organic farm (providing citrus fruits and produce whenever you need it). It sleeps up to 6 in 2 bedrooms and is offering 20% of its usual rates over Christmas and the New Year making it only €520 / £440 per week. See attached photo and http://www.oneoffplaces.co.uk/Europe/Italy/Sicily/The-House-of-Camellia.aspx . Flights* from £370 return per adult from London to Catania over Christmas week.

Thermal spa in Slovenia?
Lie back in steaming water while the snow falls all around you at Vino Cottage, a stunning location in the beautiful Goricko National Park in North East Slovenia. It sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms, has central heating and a wood burning stove and offers nearby access to trips into Austria, Hungary and Croatia plus there is skiing at Maribor, about an hour away. A totally new experience for only £200 per week throughout the winter months (or £50 per night). See attached photo and http://www.oneoffplaces.co.uk/Europe/Slovenia/Prekmurje/Vino-Cottage.aspx . Flights* from London to Graz from only £314 return per adult over Christmas week.

Amazing Christmas Deals on a tiny Caribbean paradise with One Off Places!

The tiny island of Bequia has a unique, magical charm which is hard to find anywhere else in the Caribbean. Measuring just 7 square miles, and with a population of fewer than six thousand, it feels like home from the moment you arrive as friendliness is the watchword, and the pace is relaxed and easy-going. As with many of the Windward Islands, don't be surprised if you are greeted with a warm hello as you walk along the street - a centuries-old dependence on inter-island shipping and trading has meant that Bequians have been eagerly welcoming visitors to their shores for generations. And as the next few months coincide with their dry season this is a great time to visit with good daytime temperatures and a gentle sea breeze ensuring that any visitor is never less than comfortable! As befits its location, Bequia boasts some stunning holiday accommodation and visitors to either of the below properties will immediately feel as though they have found their own Caribbean paradise.

Whispers Villa – US$1000 discount per week until the end of the year

Whispers is a luxury private villa which nestles on the side of hill on Bequia. It has stunning views over the islands of the Grenadines. This romantic spot is extraordinarily peaceful - it takes its name from the whispering of the wind in the trees, and of the waves on the shore below. Whispers is a superb design which features a wonderful blend of traditional Caribbean features, such as the high vaulted ceilings and the wraparound balconies, alongside stylish European colours and furnishings. It has 3 luxury bedrooms (each ensuite), and a view that stretches over the Grenadines in one direction and over to Mustique in the other. Wonderfully secluded and yet only a 10 minute walk from the beach this is the perfect romantic holiday destination. And as the owners are offering a US$1000 discount off any week before 29th December this year, making a week there only US$2000 (around £1200 at today’s rates – i.e. £200 per person per week for 6 people sharing), there really could not be a better time to be taking a One Off Christmas in the sun! See:
http://www.oneoffplaces.co.uk/The-Americas/St-Vincent-and-the-Grenadines/Bequia/Whispers-Villa.aspx

A One Off Trip to Remember at The Old Fort
For larger parties, this former plantation is now available for weekly villa rentals. With 6 unique bedrooms and every amenity you will need, this really is one of the most outstanding rental properties in the Caribbean. It is ideally located, offering breathtaking 180° views of the Grenadine Islands, including Mustique and distant Grenada while being only a 5 - 10 min drive away from the best beaches, restaurants, shops and activities. Harking back to its original purpose as a plantation house, its ancient buildings are set in acres of lush, tropical gardens, whilst six spacious bedrooms are located in various areas of the main mansion, providing truly unique atmosphere and luxury in a stunning natural setting. The estate grounds are extensive with nature walks through meadows to seaside cliffs, and hikes to nearby secluded beaches. A new open air pool with jacuzzi and waterfall is perched over the ocean, allowing for breathtaking panoramas. For dining and evening arrangements, there is a ‘club room’ with fireplace along with patios, a dining area, an extensive wine cellar, office with wireless internet, wonderfully helpful staff including waitress, maids/laundry, gardener, renowned kitchen chef and on-compound manager. There is even a vehicle available for guests own use. At the time of writing there is still availability over the Christmas period, and prices start at US$8500 (around £5475 at today’s rates) in December this year for full occupancy of all 6 rooms – although less are available if required. All in all, this is the perfect destination for a truly One Off trip to remember – whether that be a holiday, a honeymoon or even the ceremony itself! See:
http://www.oneoffplaces.co.uk/The-Americas/St-Vincent-and-the-Grenadines/Bequia/The-Old-Fort.aspx

Getting there and away:
Bequia can be reached via several of the major Caribbean gateways with Barbados being particularly recommended owing to frequency of connecting flights (flights to Barbados start at around £730 return in December). From there it is a 40 minute journey by plane (additional cost of US$150 approx.). Alternatively, visitors could fly to St Vincent (9 miles north of Bequia) and hop on a ferry for an immediate taste of island life! Owners of either property above would be delighted to assist with any travel plans or specific questions that may arise.

Beating the crunch, and making the most of the rental opportunity

As recent research is clearly showing, owners of second homes or holiday properties are increasingly seeking to rent these out for extra income during the ‘credit crunch’. This has resulted in a huge rise in applications to join One Off Places – the new holiday letting company who provide holiday makers with direct access to the more individual and characterful properties on the market.

Olly Symonds, Director of One Off Places, says: “Since the launch of our website we have been overwhelmed by feedback from both property owners and users saying that it has been a breath of fresh air to find a site providing properties that supply that X factor of being unusual, without being gimmicky. This, combined with our recent decision to offer a discount to new approved registrations, has recently resulted in a 70% increase in applications to register from owners who are looking to maximise their property’s rental income during these challenging times.”

Originally formed in response to demand from holidaymakers seeking something different, travel company One Off Places is currently offering a discounted deal on all new listings. The standard advertising fee is normally £95 for one year – One Off Places is offering a pay for 8 months, get 4 months free deal which reduces this fee to £63.33 for any eligible property registered onto their site between now and the end of 2008. One Off Places is already offering a large selection of properties in over 30 countries worldwide, ranging from a merchant’s house in Morocco to mountain hideaways in the Haute-Pyrenees.

Greece – time for a little self-catering?

Holidays in Greece don’t always get good press these days. There’s often some story about an unfortunate soul booking his family vacation in the same hotel as the 100-strong stag party from Droitwich, or Mr and Mrs Jones’ luxury water-front hotel room actually facing onto the local sewage pipe outlet.

The problem is – you never quite know what you’re going to get in the large holiday resorts. You might have a breathtaking view from your hotel room, but food so bad that you won’t even give it to the bad-breathed stray dog sitting at your feet. More importantly - you’re missing out on one big thing. Greece.

Greece – from its lesser-explored interior to its multitude of islands – is one of the most beautiful places on earth. It didn’t earn its title as ‘the cradle of civilisation’ for nothing... From ancient amphitheatres to hilltop olive farms and whitewashed villages perched precariously on hillsides, Greece has everything to offer and more. And that’s just the location. What about the people – some of the friendliest you’re ever likely to meet and a culture that adores children? Or indeed the local food – mouth-watering olives, cheeses, meats, retisna – all home grown and beautifully prepared.

So how do you experience the real thing? If you want a real escape, with no strings attached, then try a self-catering holiday. There are plenty of tailor-made properties out there to give you what you really want from a holiday. Be it a secluded beach-front villa or a converted stone monastery – there will be something for you. And while you sit on your private patio, sipping your local retsina and watching the sun dip behind the horizon, you can reflect on the fact that you don’t always have to believe what you read in the papers…

To see what http://www.oneoffplaces.co.uk/ has to offer in Greece, go to our search page and type in Greece.

Land of Plenty – Andalucia

Here’s the thing. Andalucia is big. So big that it’s got a little bit of everything.

From the majestic 3000 metre peaks of the Sierra Nevada that sweep their way down to a sparkling Mediterranean coastline, to the culture laden cities of Seville and Granada – there will certainly be something that makes Andalucia a holiday destination to remember.

You won’t be the first to experience its appeal, however. The Tartessians, Phoenicians, Carthagineans, Romans, Vandals, Visigoths and Moors all got there before you. And it’s a good thing they did because Andalucia is literally dripping with architectural jewels courtesy of its previous uninvited guests. The Moorish influence is apparent across the region – not just in the well-known spots such as Granada, but off the beaten track you are likely to stumble across some remnant of Spain’s multicultural past.

And therein lies the key to making the most of Andalucia. To truly experience this land of plenty you need to get off the beaten track. It’s one thing to stay in the safety of a beachfront complex, but it’s another thing altogether to base yourself in the real Andalucia. To experience the authentic flavour of centuries of multicultural culinary mixing, to understand the culture that shaped artists such as Picasso and Velazquez, to taste the wine that us foreigners never get our hands on – you need to look a little further than the glossy holiday brochures.

Fortunately, finding a unique, one-off place to stay in the heart of Andalucia couldn’t be easier nowadays. Whether you’re looking for a mountain hideaway with goats in the garden, an olive farm with local ‘Costa’ wine on tap, or an apartment within the walls of a historic city – there will be something out there to suit your needs. Once you’ve found the spot, then Andalucia will do the rest.

Top three one off places in Andalucia:

Dar Hajra: http://www.oneoffplaces.co.uk/viewPropertyDetails.aspx?ID=282

One of Andalucia’s most spectacular rental properties, sculpted around a rocky crag in a forest of the Grazalema park. The views are inspirational, the infinity pool amazing, and the house has been decorated with great style. You’ll find no more romantic a hideaway: this is a place to let your spirit soar.

Palacete de Cazulas - http://www.oneoffplaces.co.uk/viewPropertyDetails.aspx?ID=317

This exquisite Andalucian country mansion is the perfect place for large family and friends holidays. This jewel of a property dates back to 1492 and is set deep in the heart of the Spanish hinterland in a private, quiet and peaceful setting. With luxurious interiors and beautiful gardens, this is no ordinary holiday rental!

La Molina del Olivar - http://www.oneoffplaces.co.uk/viewPropertyDetails.aspx?ID=192

Cyprus - more than meets the eye

Cyprus. The name itself conjures up images of long sandy beaches, crystal blue waters, hills dotted with olive groves and traditional white washed villages. Sadly, more recently it also conjures up images of overcrowded, ugly tourist resorts with cheap restaurants catering to mismatched international tastes….

The problem with Cyprus is that it’s no longer a well-kept secret. This small island receives hundreds of thousands of visitors every year and, quite simply - it’s got to put them all somewhere. Resorts and complexes abound – catering for family and group holidays from all over Europe. Deals are good and numbers increasing – aided of course by the growing number of low cost airlines and flight options.

For many, the island is becoming a home away from home. Apart from the improved weather and the beautiful scenery, the resorts, by their very nature, seemingly absorb the local culture and create a watered down, international version of it. There’s something lacking in authentic charm.

Fortunately there is a way around it. Increasingly large numbers of visitors are opting for the ‘real’ Cyprus holiday experience and as these discerning travellers are increasing in number, so too are their options. Finding an individual, one-off property to stay in is straightforward nowadays as islanders and foreign property owners realise the growing demand. More and more properties are becoming available to rent and at prices that won’t break the bank. Whether you want to stay in a traditional stone house in a local village or a secluded luxury villa in an olive grove – the options are now at your disposal. You just have to decide which in unique way you’re going to discover the real charms of Cyprus.

My favourite Spanish property

Finca el Tornero de Abajo

This Spanish finca is a recent addition to http://www.oneoffplaces.co.uk/ and is not only utterly gorgeous, but amazing value as well.

Set in a National Park, this is a stunning property, modelled on an old Spanish ‘cortijo’. Being only a kilometre from Aracena, it is within easy walking distance of the town, yet wonderfully secluded, tucked in around the side of a hill, giving breathtaking views over the Aracena reservoir and away to the far off peaks of the Badajoz province. Just as perfect for 2-4 people, as it is for 6-8.

The house is built on an L-shaped design with towering wooden-beamed ceilings that keep the house cool. In one leg, the huge well-appointed kitchen leads through a wide arch into a beautiful sitting room, off which three French windows open out onto a large balcony. In the south facing leg, along a passage, are the spacious bedrooms, kept cool during the day by the dappled shade of chestnut trees. There are two ensuite bedrooms, one with its own balcony, and two with a shared bathroom / shower. The beds in three of the rooms can be either doubles or two singles. Downstairs there is a large playroom / dormitory with a pool table and DVD player and television screen. There are four sofa beds, two double and two single, and a shower room leading off. On the north side of the house, there is a laundry and a self contained apartment with a ‘Scottish’ double bed, kitchen, seating area and shower room.

Price starts at £700 for one week (bargain when shared between 6-8 people). Find out more by visiting http://www.oneoffplaces.co.uk/viewPropertyDetails.aspx?ID=291

A taste of Arabic culture - Moroccan Riads

Having spent a fair bit of time in Morocco myself, I'm particularly taken with some of the Riads which we have put up on One Off Places. Ironically, in Morocco itself, a riad is probably anything but a 'one off place', but in the knowledge that the majority of our visitors come from UK and Europe, to us, there is still something very special about them!

So far, the majority of the ones we are listing are in Marrakech, usually deep in the Medina, offering any visitors the chance to be completely immersed in Moroccan life. The pace of Marrakech can be pretty frenetic, especially for those not used to it, so there's nothing better than being able to retreat to your Riad hideaway when it all gets too much for you!

This ornate riad dates back to the 16th century and has a beautiful roof terrace and a plunge pool in the courtyard. From Marrakech it's an easy journey out of the city to the coast or the mountains. For more info about this riad, see http://www.oneoffplaces.co.uk/viewPropertyDetails.aspx?ID=234

If you can't face the hustle and bustle of city life, then head for this property in Essaouira. Riad de la Mer is an 18th century Jewish merchant’s house situated in the oldest part of the Medina, known as the Kasbah. Recently restored with the addition of modern facilities, it nevertheless retains the rich character of the original house. It has panoramic views from the terrace of the sea and port and beyond. Places a bit closer to home

This month I've started targeting places a bit closer to home, so I'm trying to source One Off Places in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. One of my favourites is 'Sithean', a new and ecologically friendly house on a working organic hill farm overlooking Glen Lonan in Scotland. It looks gorgeous! Have a look at this:

You can see more details about this place if you click on this link: http://www.oneoffplaces.co.uk/viewPropertyDetails.aspx?ID=273.

Meanwhile, I will continue on my search for the UK hideaways!

FORGET RESORT APARTMENTS – HOW ABOUT A ONE OFF PLACE?

Brand new travel company, OneOffPlaces.co.uk, has just launched a unique service for those holiday makers who require individual and one off style accommodation choices around the world.

With more and more people wanting to travel, and competition being so fierce, the more individual and characterful properties are often being swamped by the resort style holiday accommodation, so One Off Places offers people the chance to book unique accommodation that is not widely known about.

One Off Places offers users the chance to search for their chosen property by location, style, type, price and facility. Once the user has narrowed down their search, they can send their enquiries directly to the property owner, so they can be sure that they are getting first hand responses and support when booking their holiday.

Tabitha Symonds, Director of One Off Places, says: “Low cost airlines and the ability to book each component of your holiday online means you have much more control over your holiday booking these days – you don’t have to rely on a travel agent to find what you want. We don’t focus solely on exclusive or luxury properties – we offer a wide range of property types and prices to suit all budgets. If you are looking for a property with a difference, away from the mass market destinations, then One Off Places will have something to suit you”.

One Off Places is already offering a large selection of properties in over 20 countries worldwide, from a hilltop priory in Tuscany, a windmill house in the Azores, a Mongolian Yurt in Portugal and a mountain top designer house in Southern Spain.

Prices start at £200 a week for a four bedroom gite on an organic farm in the midi Pyrenees in France. Wander through the woods, pick chestnuts in the autumn and sit back in the oak beamed living area to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Or head for Casa Cichella (from £500) in Italy where you can choose between relaxing by the pool, hiking in the surrounding area, or taking a digital photography course.

For a trip further afield, from £250 per week you can stay in a wooden cabin in the Lake District of central Bali from where you can go trekking the mountains, visit the bustling markets and go boating on the lakes.
